Meet The Member – Emily

What was your lifestyle/motivation like prior to joining the gym?
A: I have always liked playing sport, exercising and challenging myself. I’ve never been one to just go to the gym on my own though. I prefer doing classes and anything that involves being outdoors.

When I was at University, I just stopped doing exercise and would cram in as much fitness as I could over the summer working as a beach lifeguard.

For the next five years this cycle repeated itself. After I finished my final season, I started gaining weight from overeating and lack of exercise. That’s when I knew I needed to join a gym that suited my needs.

What were your initial goals when you first joined the Edge and have you achieved them?
A: I had multiple. At first it was just to get back into exercising and to find something I enjoyed and wouldn’t get bored doing. Then when the exercise bug hit me, I wanted to lose X amount of weight. I achieved this goal and I am now working on keeping the weight off, toning up and building better stamina to help make the running sessions easier.

What have been the main motivating factors that kept you on track towards achieving your goals?
A: How much I enjoy going to the gym. I was shocked at how much! I feel bad if I miss a session and I plan my week around the gym – which never was a thing before! I think the main factor that kept me on track was how supportive all the other members are, and how much everyone motivates you to do better. If it wasn’t for them, I do not think I would have achieved my goals as quickly.

Which programmes or classes do you enjoy the most and why?
A: The conditioning classes – love to hate them, nothing compares. Everyone encourages each other. It is one big sweaty family working together to smash goals.

Why the Edge?
A: I joined The Edge on Charlotte’s (my sister) recommendation. She had been training with Paul (her strength and conditioning coach) as a sprinter. So, thank you for introducing me because it really did change my life! My fitness, health and confidence has never been better and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. It’s just the best, has the most knowledgeable trainers and I have made some amazing friends for life.

Quick fire questions:

Favourite film?
A: Gone Girl.

Favourite food?
A: Pizza or Beth’s cheesecakes – they’re the best!

What’s your go-to cheat meal?
A: Takeaway.

Which trainer would you most like to strangle?
A: Probably Paul, but in a (secretly) good way. I like being pushed to a limit I didn’t know I had. He knows how to get the best out of everyone. Chances are if you’re with him in a group you’ll be in the smallest team and have to work twice as hard because he is so fast.

Who’s the worst training partner and why?
A: Maddie. We just end up laughing at each other’s crazy gym faces and it turns into a big competition, with neither of us finishing in a good state.
